Project Impact

Inspire Multicultural Participation in Acting, Community, Theatre

The workshop aims to encourage participants to express themselves, verbally and nonverbally, through fun theatre games and exercises. The workshop content is a mix of exercises from different contemporary theatre genres, e.g. playback theatre, psychophysical actor training and image theatre etc.. It focuses on the participatory experience rather than outcome, allowing the participants to tell the stories of their community in front of an audience. After the workshop, we may invite some participants to take part in a theatre piece which is tentatively scheduled at late August/ early September 2019. The theatre project aims at telling the stories of first generation South Asian settlers in Hong Kong. The theatre performance will hope to raise the awareness of the general public about the history and contributions of south Asians in Hong Kong.

Notes on Project Impact

One year ago, Professor Leung invited us to get together to create Project Impact, and begin this exciting journey.  We decided that instead of putting on a written play, we would work with our participants’ experiences to create the script, helping them to find ways to tell their own stories through a theatre performance.

During this pilot scheme, the participants have been through 24 hours of theatre workshops, including creative writing, story telling, physical movement and characterisation, voice training and dancing, to give them a taste of a wide variety of different skills that go together to create theatre.

We are very happy to have met these creative and hard-working teenagers, whose enthusiasm and perseverance made this possible.  All the stories in the presentation you see are written by them, and we hope that they will continue to believe in the power of sharing them.

Thanks again to Professor Lisa Leung and Lingnan University for making this pilot scheme happen.  We hope that we can gain more support from the public to keep Project Impact impacting the lives of South Asian teenagers in Hong Kong.
